I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Gift Guide Day 4 iPod Touch

For day for of the gift guide I go the obvious route. The iPod Touch. These devices do the opposite of most consumer electronics, they actually get better with age. Every few months Apple updates the system software for free or a nominal charge and users gain new functionality. The iTunes store gives users music, TV shows, Movies and over 10,000 applications to choose from for little or no cost. Every few weeks a new application comes out that make my it better and I get the new toy feeling all over again.

The iPod Touch can make a very pocketable replacement for a laptop for checking email surfing the net, checking stocks, weather or finding directions. Sure you can’t do it everywhere with the touch but the same applies with a laptop and it is much easier to carry.

Here is Microsoft’s next jab at the Apple commercials. I like it much better than the first attempts. Still not sure it makes me want to buy a PC. Maybe it makes PC folks feel ok about owning a PC and not switching to mac.

The recent Apple event has come and gone. The new ipod nanos and revised Touch look cool enough. Changes to iTunes aren’t ground breaking but I love the new Genius playlists and Sidebar and the totally useless new visualizer rocks. The keynote is worth a look if you don’t want to figure out the new changes on your own.

On the iPhone front, the 2.1 software comes out tomorrow and in Steve’s own words provides – Significantly better battery life, fewer call drops tons of bug fixes, faster backups to iTunes and No app crashes. sounds good to me.

Speaking of iphone apps. This one looks interesting. Something to keep the kids busy in the car. A review of Enigmo by Kevin Rose.

New itunes 8 visualizer?

This is the rumored new visualizer for iTunes 8 Visualizers are just like several other features in OSX and Vista, they are cool for demos but no one really uses them. I have to admit as far as itunes visualizers go this one is pretty cool. The only real use is see for visualizers is during a party on a large monitor or projected on to a wall. On the other hand the photographer in me would rather see photos. I will explain more about this next week with some photos from a party I am about to do exactly that.

The dirty little secret about phones that use 3G is battery life. It will be interesting to see how this plays out after the iphone launch . Even though the new iphone has a better battery than the old one and most if not all other 3G phones it will have trouble making it through the work day. The fix? leave 3G off unless you really need it.

Photoshop Elements 6 is another item on my MacWorld list of things to see. For people who need more than iPhoto but don’t need all the power of photoshop. I like the way the group shots feature works. You can do this in Photoshop but not this easily.

Android the true geek phone platform from Google. Android is not a phone but a platform. This is what makes it a great geek phone. Geeks can never agree on what makes the best device. With Android every geek can have his own phone and customize it at the hardware and software level to their hearts desire. The Android platform reminds me of something Microsoft would do. Take some of the cool features from the iPhone and release a mobile OS. The twist here is Google made the whole thing open source and that makes a huge difference. You can modify the operating system anyway they want with no restrictions. Watch the video from my favorite muppet Sergey Brin.

You can definitely see some resemblance to OSX and the iphone. From the Webkit browser (from Apple) to the icons.
